Demetre Haralamb Chiparus was born in 1886 in Dorohoi, Romania very close to the boarder of Ukraine.Chiparus started his studies in Italy with the sculptor Rafaello Romanelli and then moved to France. Firstly staying in Florence and then eventually moving to Paris. Here he studied the decorative arts under Antonin Mercier and Jean Boucher.
Europe in the 1920’s was dominated by the Art Deco era and it was an exciting time of Glamour, Adventure and Hedonism. New music, vibrant colours and energy poured over Paris in abundance. Artist, Designers and wealth, lined the streets for a piece of this new action. This included Chiparus who was heavily influenced by ‘Egyptomania’, music halls, cabaret, motion pictures and the famous ‘Ballet Russes’.
His work combined the medium of ivory with bronze this was called Chryselephantine which appealed to the elegance and luxury of this golden age. Chiparus's work is very popular and has been highly collected since the 1920's.
